The third city forming the Rhine-Main Region together with Mainz and Frankfurt is Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse. Its name, meaning "meadow baths", stems from the multitude of hot springs surfacing in the city area. A settlement in the area was first mentioned in 121 with the name of Aquae Mattiacorum (the Waters of the Mattiaci”) and from the Middle Ages on the name of "Wisibada" came into use.

Up to this day there are several locations where the thermal springs are freely accessible for the public (e.g. at the Kochbrunnen – Boiling Spring), others are used for spas. Due to the old spa tradition and the city’s popularity with the wealthy, the inner city boasts many magnificent representative buildings from the beginning of the 20th century, largely undamaged by World War II and always worth a visit.

Apart from hot springs and old buildings Wiesbaden is the perfect starting point for excursions into the Roman past of the area, to visit the neighboring cities Mainz and Frankfurt or explore the various hiking trails in the Taunus Mountains. Wiesbaden sightseeing

Mount Nero
With 245 meters above sea level the house-mountain of Wiesbaden offers a splendid view over the city. Getting to the top is easy using the Nerobergbahn - a cable car, powered by water installed in 1888.

Places to visit on Mount Nero are the russian-orthodox chapel, whose golden turrets are visible from almost everywhere in Wiesbaden, the temple-like pavilion and the Opelbad, a public open air pool.
Palace Square
The Palace Square (Schlossplatz) forms the center of the historical city center and contains some of the oldest buildings in Wiesbaden. Among these are both the Old and the New Town Hall (built 1608 and 1884 respectively). The Stadtschloss (City Palace), built by the dukes of Nassau, serves as parliamentary building for the federal state of Hesse.

Spa Hotel and Theater
The centerpiece of Wiesbaden’s socalled „spa corner“ is the Bowling Green, a rectangular lawn with two fountains. At the head of the Green the Kurhaus (spa hotel) functions as representative building for many festivities and harbors the local casino. The northern and eastern sides of the Green are flanked by the Theater-colonnades and the Spa-Hotel-colonnades. As centerpiece of the inner city the square functions as stage for many open-air events like concerts and street festivals. If you do not want to check into one of the noble hotels located here you can find and book a cheap private accommodation with your accommodation service gloveler.com.
